When out walking I guess you often find yourself
wondering "What is the name of that hill in the distance?"
or arguing with fellow walkers whether, if it wasn't for the
rain, you would be able to see the Isle of Man. Well, if you
are in Britain, this page is for you. The image above shows
schematic views from the summits of hills across England, Scotland,
Wales and the Isle of Man and names the nearest surrounding
hills. It uses the list of Marilyns,
the hills of Britain with at least a 150 metre drop to any surrounding
hills, compiled by Alan Dawson in his book The Relative
Hills of Britain (Cicerone Press 1992). The book's
text and other interesting information can be found at the Marilyns
News Centre.
The drop-down selector allows the viewpoint hill
to be chosen and the two slide bars allow the direction of view
and angle of view to be adjusted. The yellow spot in the sky
shows the position of the Sun.
